sisters & sparrows

Poetry. Photography. Life.

Is there no hope for the lover of free verse!  I woke up to this text this morning from my dear sister.  It’s a quote from a letter from C S Lewis, a writer and lecturer at Oxford, to a girl called Joan:

You know, my dear, it’s only doing you harm to write vers libre.  After you have been writing strict, rhyming verse for about ten years, it will be time to venture on to the free sort.  At present it only encourages you to write prose not so good as your ordinary prose and type it like verse.  Sorry to be a pig!

Here he is in his house coat.

Trying to write well is a real mission.
